Pediatric experts gather in Washington D.C. to push national agenda on children's mental health

Children's hospitals have to push the political agenda to solve the problem of unequal mental health care and fight for better access, former U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy told a summit of hospital representatives in Washington on Wednesday. "We don't treat illness of the brain the same way we treat every other illness of the body," Kennedy said while comparing mental health charity to a civil rights issue. "The way we pay for mental health today, if we were paying for diabetes care, we would be waiting until you had to have your legs amputated before we would pay for care. And we wouldn't imagine doing that."
